About Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang A. Herrmann

Wolfgang Herrmann was President of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) from 1995 to 2019 and is considered one of the most successful contemporary university presidents. During his time in office, TUM became one of the most prominent research universities in Europe and has consistently been part of the exclusive group of “Universities of Excellence” since 2006.

Prof. Herrmann is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science, the Board of Trustees of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Roland Berger Foundation, and the Senate of the Max Planck Society.

He has been awarded the Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation, the Bavarian Order of Merit, the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art, 13 honorary doctorates, several honorary citizenships, and was honoured as President of the Year by the German University Association and as University Manager of the Year by the Financial Times.

Prof. Herrmann studied chemistry at TUM and completed his diploma thesis under the future Nobel Prize winner Prof. Ernst Otto Fischer. He then earned his doctoral degree and habilitation at the University of Regensburg.
