Dr. Leonhard Birnbaum

Leonhard Birnbaum has been CEO of E.ON SE, one of Europe’s largest energy companies with almost 70,000 employees and revenues of more than €115 billion, since April 2021 and is one of the most important top managers in Europe. He joined the company’s management board in 2013 and was also CEO of innogy SE from 2019 to 2020.

Dr. Birnbaum also serves as Vice President of the Executive Committee of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), Vice President of the European Electricity Industry Association (Eurelectric), and Vice Chairman of the World Energy Council.

He began his professional career as a consultant at McKinsey in Düsseldorf and became a senior partner for the energy and industry sector. In 2008, he joined RWE AG and was appointed to the management board in the same year.

Dr. Birnbaum studied chemical engineering in Karlsruhe and received his doctorate from the University of Cottbus after having completed his research in Karlsruhe.
